The Leadership Trust Foundation (LTF) and The University of Strathclyde Graduate School of Business (USGSB) have developed this unique MBA degree with a specialism in Leadership Studies (MBA/LS).

This MBA combines the development of practical leadership skills with the intellectual depth and rigour of a core curriculum in business and management studies in a top AMBA, EQUIS and AACSB accredited university business school.

The programme blends an understanding of business functions, strategic thinking and practical leadership skills with the development of self-awareness and self-confidence.  Using a unique integration of learning methods, the programme aims to develop participants’ potential to become outstanding leaders.

Admissions Criteria

The MBA/LS is specifically aimed at directors and high-potential managers and is suited to professionals in both the private and public sectors.  It has been designed for those who want to have a solid up-to-date grounding in business and general management but who also believe that outstanding leadership is the distinctive competency shared by successful chief executives, directors, senior managers and professionals.

To be eligible for admission, candidates for the MBA/LS will need to have either:

  • a recognised UK university degree, or an equivalent academic qualification from a non-UK institution, or an equivalent professional qualification, plus at least three years' subsequent work experience,
    or
  • at least 10 years' relevant work experience for initial admission to the Diploma programme and later transfer to the MBA/LS on satisfactory progress.

The minimum age for entry is 24 years.

Key Features and Objectives

The MBA/LS aims to help directors and managers develop themselves into outstanding leaders. Several key features of the programme enable this:

  • The MBA/LS provides the core curriculum of the Strathclyde MBA, the internationall recognised senior management qualification
  • The specialism in Leadership studies blends an inter-disciplinary understanding of business functions, strategy and strategic thinking with an understanding of the leadership process and the practical development of leadership skills
  • The MBA/LS enhances participants self-awareness, self-control and self-confidence through personal experience of practical leadership and teamwork situations: we believe that effective leadship starts with learning to know and control oneself
  • The programme provides an innovative synergy of learning approaches at SGSB and LTF
  • The MBA/LS provides a unique blend of the development of practical leadership skills at one end of Europe's foremost leadership development organisations with the intellectual depth and rigour expected of a top university business school.

Programme Structure

The MBA/LS employs a flexible learning approach that combines distance learning through specially designed course materials and tutor support, formal courses, experiential workshops, assignments, project work and a dissertation.  The programme typically takes three years to complete.

Residential time is spent at The Leadership Trust in Ross-on-Wye and at the University of Strathclyde Graduate School of Business in Glasgow, amounting typically to 14 days in year one, five days in year two and six days in year three, but this can be varied to suit individual circumstances.  The programme can also be taken in a more intensive form over two years or less intensively over four or five years. 

Assessment is by written examinations, coursework and assignments, and a work-based project and dissertation.

Participants may start the programme in November or April each year.

Programme Content

The MBA/LS contains the following modules:

  • The Learning Manager
  • Business Processes and Fundamentals
  • Management, Strategy and the International Environment
  • Leadership in Organisations
  • Leadership Project and Dissertation

Participants’ personal interests in management and leadership may be pursued through a choice of topics in assignments and in the project.

Programme Fees

For academic year 2009/10, programme fees are £17,500, payable in two equal parts on enrolment and at the start of the second year.
